How It Works
MyWiFiSucks measures your connection and translates the numbers into easy-to-understand verdicts for the things you actually do: gaming, streaming, video chat, browsing, and live sports. This page explains what gets measured and how the verdicts are scored.
What The Test Measures
- Download is how fast data reaches you, in megabits per second (Mbps). Streaming, browsing, and downloads depend on it.
- Upload is how fast data leaves your device. Video calls and file sharing depend on it.
- Ping is the round-trip time between your device and the server, in milliseconds (ms). Lower is better. Gaming lives and dies by ping.
- Jitter is how much your ping varies from moment to moment. High jitter makes calls stutter and games feel inconsistent even when the average ping looks fine.
How The Test Runs
- Ping: the test sends 10 quick requests to the server. The first is discarded as a warm-up, the highest and lowest are dropped, and the median of the rest is your ping. Jitter comes from the variation between those samples.
- Download: up to 3 connections stream data in parallel for 5 to 15 seconds. Throughput is sampled in one-second windows and the test ends early once the rate stabilizes. The reported number is the 90th percentile window: your sustained best, the same figure the major speed tests report.
- Upload: up to 4 connections send randomly generated data for 4 to 12 seconds, measured the same way. Some connections target a second server address to get around per-connection limits that would otherwise understate fast uploads.
- Each run caps its own data usage at 384 MB down and 192 MB up.
How Verdicts Are Scored
Each activity cares about different metrics. Every relevant metric is rated excellent, good, fair, or poor against the thresholds below, and the ratings are combined using the weighting listed under each table. The result is the verdict on your report card. These are the same numbers the live test uses.
